Setting Students

At Thomas Hepburn Community Academy we offer three learning pathways: Academic, Vocational and Integrated

Academic

Learners on the Academic pathway will study courses that lead to GCSE qualifications at the end of Year 11. In the Lower School they will have a broad curriculum which includes: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, Design Technology, Expressive and Performing Arts and Physical Education. When learners make their option choices at the end of Year 8 they will have a core offer of English, Mathematics, Science, History or Geography, Spanish or French, RE and PE. They will then choose two subjects from a wide range of GCSE options.

Vocational

Learners on the Vocational pathway will study courses that lead to qualifications in both vocational andGCSE qualifications by the end of Year 11. In the Lower School they will have a broad curriculum which includes:English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Humanities,Design Technology, Expressive and Performing Arts and Physical Education. They will also receive extra time in the key areas of Literacy & Numeracy. When learners make their option choices at the end of Year 8 they will have a core offer of English, Mathematics, Science, RE and PE. They will then choose from a wide range of vocational options as well as studying a programme of Work Related Learning.

Integrated

Learners on the Integrated pathway will study courses that lead to GCSE qualifications by the end of Year 11 but will also have the option to select some vocational options where appropriate. In the Lower School they will have a broad curriculum which includes: English, Mathematics, Science, Computer Science, ICT, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, Design Technology, Expressive and Performing Arts and Physical Education.Extra time will also be dedicated to Literacy & Numeracy where it is appropriate. When learners make their option choices at the end of Year 8 they will have a core offer of English, Mathematics, Science, French or Spanish,RE and PE. They will then choose from a wide range of GCSE and vocational options.

Although learners will be placed on a pathway when they join the academy in Year 7 this is not fixed and the curriculum is designed in such a way that it is flexible and learners are able to move between different pathways. This will always be done in consultation with parents/carers.
